Due to the ever-increasing sensitivity of the population it is necessary to offer a transparent picture of environmental problems. The whole strategy which has been developed by the airport management has been planned around a strict control
of the development of flight movements. At the same time it comprises proposals for huge environmental protection measures and for the minimisation of the damage to the environment. The concept supports, sustains and improves the acceptance of the airport by the local residents. This is the only way we can ensure a long term economic existence for the airport.
The development of this acceptance by the population is a strategic goal of an "environmentally oriented airport". The following measures have been concretely put into action.
Restriction of Types of Aircraft
In spite of the increasing flight movements the restriction on the quietest of aircraft types has resulted in a noticeable reduction in noise.
Surveillance and Control
The control of the development of noise by Salzburg's Municipal Environmental Office was made possible by the direct connection the office has to the noise and flight movement control systems. The permanent control and the evaluation of millions of pieces of measuring data resulted in the area surrounding the airport becoming significantly "quieter" than expected according to all the calculations made. In spite of the flight movement increasing by 114% since 1988 the annual energy equivalent constant noise level has decreased by a dramatic 80%. It has been possible to develop low noise air traffic system in Salzburg through the unique cooperation between the airport, airlines, politicians, residents and the flight alarm commission. This special situation at Salzburg is being observed worldwide as the airport operations are so economically successful whilst maintaining the high standards for the protection of the population.
