Renovation of the flight track monitoring system: The new flight track monitoring system went into operation at Salzburg Airport at the end of December, just in time for the beginning of the winter charter season.
The radar data are supplied by Austro Control, Austria's air traffic control association, in the new ASTERIX data format. A separate contract was drawn up stipulating that the flight path recording data may only be used for environmental protection purposes in satisfaction of data protection laws. The landing and departure flight paths will be recorded for all aircraft equipped with transponders.
RAFIC
The new RAFIC (Radar and Flight Information Capture) system was installed by the Bruel and Kjaer company in December 2001. The latest colour card of the Federal Office for Calibration and Measurement appears on the screen of the system. The flight paths are depicted in diverse colours based on this card. There is a new computer programme which makes it possible to find the corresponding street names and through this it can blend in any location where a complaint was made. A recent development was the installation of a so-called area depiction which enables access to the five fixed noise control points in Austria and Bavaria. It is also possible to measure distances between residential properties and flight routes. RAFIC can also facilitate a radar coordination and a GPS coordination which is absolutely essential for the fire brigade.
In the future the airport will also be able to map, if necessary, a noise graph with the help of an INM (Integrated Noise Model). This has been made possible through a close cooperation with the Salzburg Municipal Office for Environmental Protection.
A special component of the new system is the so-called "Reporting Module": This can store graphs including distribution of runway utilization, maximum water level, noise statistics, assessments of certain aircraft types depending on the noise control point.
Measurement Data Storage
Since 1992 billions of measurement data records have been collected and stored at Salzburg Airport and can be retrieved at any time. Combined with the modern measurement systems, these data form the basis for objective appraisal of the noise caused by flight operations at the Airport and, at the same time, provide valuable support for public relations activities.
