Austrian airlines dominate the market
Over 80% of all charter flights in Salzburg are operated by Austrian-owned airlines with the Austrian Group leading the pack. Lauda Air flies to 17 destinations (Hurghada, Sharm el Sheik, Chania, Heraklion, Corfu, Kos, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, Zakynthos, Lamezia Terme, Funchal, Arrecife, Fuerteventura, Monastir, Antalya and Dalaman). The Austrian Arrows jets (the Fokker 70 and the Canadair Regional Jet) take summer travelers to Araxos, Calvi, Cagliari, Olbia, Catania, Naples and Southampton. Austrian itself offers flights to and from Dublin every Wednesday on an Airbus A320.#Aside from its scheduled flights from Salzburg to the Air Berlin hub of Palma, Mallorca, Niki also operates charter flights to Hurghada, Heraklion, Kos, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Palma, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Tenerife and Antalya. Even the comfortable Styrian regional jets will be used this summer for flights to the holiday destinations of Preveza, Olbia, Dalaman and Bodrum. LTU will be offering flights this summer from Salzburg to Kos and Ibiza. Holiday flights to Bulgaria, Croatia, Tunisia and Turkey will also be offered by airlines that have been operating out of Salzburg for years: Air Via (A320), Bulgaria Air (Boeing 737), Air Adriatic (Boeing MD 82), Nouvelair (A320), Tunis Air (Boeing 737-500), SunExpress (Boeing 737-800), MNG (Airbus A300), Pegasus (Boeing 737-800) and Eurocypria (Boeing 737-800).#Tour operator Hotelplan will once again this year be offering the last-minute tickets for charter flights to Salzburg that are so popular among English and Irish travelers. The eight destinations offered out of Salzburg will be Bristol, Doncaster/Sheffield, Glasgow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Dublin, Newcastle and Southampton.
Scheduled flights on the rise
In step with the trend in the aviation sector, the Airport’s main focus is on providing new scheduled connections, including flights with low-cost airlines like HLX and Ryanair. But the new cooperation with Styrian (Zurich, Paris) also shows just how important the network airlines are for the Airport. Direct flights from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf (AUA), Hamburg, Cologne, Hannover and Berlin (all with HLX) connect the important German market with the city of Mozart. And the big breakthrough in Great Britain is that for the first time three airlines connect the Island with Salzburg in scheduled traffic: Ryanair two to three times a day (depending on the season) out of London, Thomsonfly from Coventry and SkyEurope from Manchester. Dublin is being added to the scheduled routes April 4 (three times a week with Ryanair). Two new destinations to the summer flight plan are Warsaw and Barcelona, which can be reached non-stop on scheduled flights with SkyEurope.
The Air Berlin/Niki flights to the Palma hub will make it even easier to reach destinations on the Iberian Peninsula. This means that 14 cities in Spain and Portugal can be reached out of Salzburg several times a week via Palma. Air France’s Paris hub is becoming more and more important for Salzburg’s worldwide connections and there are plans to increase the Air France flights (operated by Styrian in codeshare) to three a day for the summer flight schedule.
