1956-1966: The Airport is extended
Extension 1957
The second half of the fifties was dominated by the discussion of the proposed extension of the airport.

Metre long North-South runway between the motorway "Westautobahn" and the Glan river and on the other hand the necessity of an extension of the airport on its old location, a relocation to the Flachau and the status of flight tourism in Salzburg’s whole tourist industry.

The cost of the airport’s expansion was estimated at 60 million schillings at that time. According to a report in the Salzburger Nachrichten from 13.7. there was an airport enquiry which showed a majority for the airport expansion with a tunnel underneath the runway which made it possible for the general meeting of the airport association be able to work with this positive result a few days later.
On the 27th March 1958 the first aircraft with an Austrian insignia landed at Salzburg Airport. On 1st of August the control tower was put into operation after a 15 month construction period. Air traffic control and the weather station moved to new rooms. At the end of 1958 Dipl.-Ing. Spazier became the first technician to be Managing Director of Salzburg Airport Ltd.

On the 17th July 1959 construction works started for the new runway with a length of 2200m and a width of 45 m. the underpass of the Innsbrucker-Bundesstraße was also started. In addition to the 105 million schillings for the construction work, a 31 million schillings had to be paid for property transfer fees.

The expansions steps of Salzburg Airport were also carried out in the winter months. From this point the AUA also thought to include the provinces in their air traffic. The new runway at Salzburg airport was then opened on the 1st July 1960 and on the 4th of July the first AUA flight landed on it. With the first stages of the construction work at the airport completed, the work on the airport barracks was started.

On 15th May 1961 Salzburg Airport was made safe for landing in bad weather conditions through the ILA and NDB equipment for landings in direction 16. On the 20th June the first AUA aircraft was safe to make the first night flight due to a provisory beacons. Now Salzburg Airport was a popular destination for charter flights and congress visitors. Salzburg was often used as an alternative airport for aircraft which were not able to land in Vienna, Linz or Munich because of fog. The length of the runway was now 2000 metres long with an extra 200 metres braking distance in the South.
