1966-1976: New Terminals, new Jets
Salzburg Airport 1967
With the completion of the runway extension in 1960, there was a dramatic increase in the numbers of passengers which went from 12000 to 121 000 in 1965. Salzburg Airport was able to generate over 4 million schillings which were then completely invested.

The years following 1966 saw Salzburg Airport developing successfully on. On Monday 25th July 1966, the new flight terminal building was opened appropriately in the framework of the Salzburg Festival.

Now it was the real age of the jet. In 1971 Salzburg Airport had to make a compromise due to the constant protests of the Schutzverbandes. It was initially agreed to extend the runway to 2200 metres. In addition management decided to take effective measures to reduce noise at the expense of the airport. Passenger movement increased. Despite the comprising solution there were still active discussions about extending the runway even more from 2200 to 2600 meters. These heated discussions between the direction of the Salzburg Airport and the Schutzverband, which demanded the installation of a flight noise control system in 1973.
The high point of 1975 was the meeting between President Ford (USA) and Sadat (Egypt) in Salzburg, where Richard Nixon already landed in his Boeing "United States of America" in 1974.
