Documents required for travel in a EU State or an EEA State
Great Britain: Valid passport or identification card for Austrian or German citizens.
Ireland: Valid passport for Austrian or German citizens.
Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Spain: now border control, you should nevertheless take your passport or identity card with you. Switzerland, Liechtenstein: A passport or a valid personal identity card. 
Documents required for travel in Schengen-States

For travel in Schengen states (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and Spain) There is no longer a border control. This does however may sometimes take place so it is better to take a passport or identity card with you. This counts for Austrians who wish to travel in the Schengen countries and also for those from the countries listed who would like to travel to Austria.
