Luggage Handling
There is nothing more irritating when you go on holiday than if you have problems with your luggage. Passengers are confronted with the recurring situation that their cases are missing when they arrive at there destination.

In most cases, it is a question of the luggage "missing a connection" at a large airport, where passengers can catch to their connecting flight more quickly than the luggage on the luggage conveyor belt. If this happens, passengers can be concretely informed about which flight their luggage will be sent on, when they arrive at their destination airport. This is also the case for all situations, whereby luggage has can not be taken on board due to lack of space or excess weight. It is, however, more difficult if the piece of luggage is "lost". International scheduled airlines are connected with each other through an EDP luggage search system. As each piece of luggage checked in is coded with a luggage label the search can be carried out very effectively. Logistically, passengers travelling on a charter flight have the least reasons to fear losing their luggage as they mostly travel directly from one airport to the next.

At Salzburg Airport, the luggage is weighed at the check-in desk and is then transported on the luggage conveyor belt to the luggage sorting hall. This hall is relatively big at Salzburg to be able to cope with the peak days during the winter season. A huge luggage conveyor belt receives the case from the  check-in hall at two positions. Bulky items such as skis, surf boards, bicycles, or golfing equipment are handled at a special desk and taken on belt  into the sorting hall. The luggage is taken from the sorting hall either on the luggage trollies belonging to the airport or in light metal containers belonging to the airlines. The airport employees sort the luggage on to the trollies or the containers according to their destination. The luggage crew is extremely precise at Salzburg Airport and this is proved by the statistic that just 0,00106 percent of all case leaving Salzburg Airport are sent to the wrong destination, even during the peak time.

The airport has calculated that approx 750,000 cases are loaded per year which is about 2055 cases per day. And the weight of all theses sorted cases together totals a staggering 10,000 tons!
